We note Tu BiShvat’s care for the earth, Valentine’s Day’s many forms of love, and Nirvana Day’s quiet reflection. We also mark the expected start of Ramadan in many communities, plus World Day of Social Justice. Together, these dates invite learning, respect, and neighborly connection.

This month brings a rich array of cultural, religious, and awareness observances. In this newsletter, we spotlight one major celebration to give you a taste of the insights from our full report (attached).

Spotlight: National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15–Oct 15)

Picture a street festival in late September: the aroma of fresh tamales and sweet tres leches cake fills the air, the rhythms of salsa and mariachi music invite everyone to dance, and families proudly wave flags from Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and more. This vibrant scene can only mean one thing – National Hispanic Heritage Month has arrived. Observed each year from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of over 62 million Americans of Hispanic/Latino ancestry. It’s a time to recognize the profound impact of Hispanic and Latino communities in the U.S., from shaping our national cuisine and music to driving innovation in business and science.

Why does it start in mid-September? The timing is no coincidence. In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the first Hispanic Heritage Week; it was later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988 to allow more time to honor these contributions. The mid-month start date was chosen to coincide with several Latin American countries’ independence anniversaries. September 15 is Independence Day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (all in 1821); September 16 is Mexico’s, and September 18 is Chile’s. This period was seen as a fitting window to celebrate freedom and heritage. Every year since, Americans have embraced these dates to kick off 30 days of festivities celebrating Hispanic identity.

Paid content below.

As summer begins to wind down, we are invited to recognize cultural milestones, religious traditions, social justice legacies, and health awareness campaigns that shape our diverse global community. From sacred commemorations like Obon, Tisha B’Av, and Ganesh Chaturthi to days dedicated to humanitarian service, youth empowerment, and remembering histories of struggle and triumph, August reminds us that inclusion is both remembrance and action.

For DEI and HR teams, these observances are meaningful touchpoints for community-building. Whether highlighting Indigenous peoples’ rights, affirming disability pride, or spotlighting the strength of overdose survivors, each event invites us to reflect on our shared humanity and build more responsive workplaces. Let’s explore the stories, traditions, and insights August offers – and translate them into opportunities to inform, engage, and support our teams.

to action for inclusion. From celebrating French and South Asian contributions to honoring champions of justice and freedom, July 2025 offers many opportunities to engage employees in meaningful dialogue. It’s a month where the United States marks its Independence Day alongside France’s Bastille Day – both born from struggles for liberty – and where global observances spotlight health, friendship, and the value of caring for one another. In the workplace, these events open the door for education and engagement. This newsletter will highlight each key July observance – explaining its origins and significance, sharing an interesting fact or statistic to spark interest, noting who observes it, and suggesting how it connects to our commitment to an inclusive, supportive workplace. Let’s dive into the rich diversity events and explore ways to inform and inspire our teams.

is a significant month packed with diversity and inclusion observances. It’s a time to celebrate cultural heritage, raise awareness of important social causes, and honor the contributions of diverse communities. From month-long recognitions (like Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month) to specific days (like the World Day for Cultural Diversity), these events offer opportunities for education and engagement. Understanding and participating in these observances can help professionals foster a more inclusive workplace. learning, reflection, and meaningful dialogue. Observances like International Women’s Day, Holi, and Zero Discrimination Day invite us to celebrate achievements, address challenges, and deepen connections within our shared communities. By recognizing these events, we enrich our workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods with empathy, understanding, and fresh perspectives.

As we engage with the stories and traditions highlighted in March, we learn how collective actions can spark greater equity. Simple steps—like sharing information, holding brief group discussions, or honoring someone’s heritage—encourage an environment where each person feels valued. When we choose to embrace the spirit of inclusion, we transform ordinary spaces into areas of mutual respect and support.

So, let’s take this month to explore, reflect, and grow. Whether it’s through a team-building activity, a classroom lesson, or a volunteer project, your efforts will help shape a culture that recognizes and celebrates everyone’s contributions. Together, we can drive positive change for 2025 and beyond, fostering spaces where all voices are heard and uplifted.

Taking the Next Step – Explore DEI Workplace Certifications

As we highlight this month’s diversity events, it’s an ideal time to think about how your organization can go beyond celebrating inclusion to fully embedding it into your workplace culture. pause, reflect, and connect with the many cultures and traditions that shape our world. From honoring historical moments like Black History Month and the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to the spiritual reflection of Tu BiShvat and the celebration of love and appreciation on Valentine’s Day, this month offers countless opportunities to foster understanding, respect, and unity.

As we come together to reflect on these observances, we are reminded of the power of our collective actions in advancing equity and inclusion. Whether through sharing knowledge about the impact of women in STEM, engaging in conversations around race and social justice, or simply recognizing the value of every individual’s unique experience, these events encourage each of us to create spaces where others feel valued and heard.

For workplaces, schools, nonprofits, and communities, February provides a chance to engage in meaningful discussions, learn from each other, and commit to actions that move us closer to creating equitable environments for all.

So, as we move through the month, let’s embrace the opportunity to be intentional about how we celebrate and champion diversity. Together, let’s make 2025 a year of connection and positive change as we continue to build inclusive spaces where everyone feels empowered to thrive.

Taking the Next Step – Explore DEI Workplace Certifications

As we highlight this month’s diversity events, it’s an ideal time to think about how your organization can go beyond celebrating inclusion to fully embedding it into your workplace culture. DEI Workplace Certifications offer a meaningful way to demonstrate your commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. By earning a certification, your organization showcases its dedication to equity and inclusion, positioning itself as a leader in driving impactful change.

These certifications affirm your organization’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion while setting you apart as a socially responsible and forward-thinking employer. They attract diverse talent, strengthen partnerships with like-minded organizations, and highlight your leadership in building inclusive spaces.

If your organization is already working to implement inclusive practices, pursuing a certification is a powerful way to celebrate your progress and inspire others. It’s an opportunity to build on the foundation you’ve created and make a lasting impact. Consider taking the next step—because inclusion isn’t just a value; it’s the cornerstone of a better future.

This month, we’re proud to highlight events that honor heritage, inspire reflection, and encourage us to take steps toward building more inclusive communities.

Recognizing and celebrating diversity events in January helps set the tone for the year ahead, fostering understanding, respect, and a sense of belonging. By exploring the significance of these observances, we can deepen our empathy and appreciation for the diverse experiences that shape our world. For workplaces, schools, nonprofits, and community groups, these events provide a chance to engage in impactful discussions, celebrate traditions, and demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity.

From honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. to embracing renewal during Lunar New Year, January’s events encourage us to unite across differences and reflect on the values of equity and community. Whether through educational programs, collaborative initiatives, or small acts of kindness, there are countless ways to acknowledge and celebrate these important dates.

Let’s start 2025 with intention and purpose, embracing the rich diversity that surrounds us. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered to thrive.

But in today’s diverse workplaces, planning holiday festivities can feel tricky. How do you celebrate in ways that honor different traditions, respect varying beliefs, and ensure everyone feels included?

Some employees may cherish Christmas traditions like decorating a tree or exchanging gifts. Others may celebrate Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa—or prefer to skip holiday celebrations altogether. For newcomers, the season might be an opportunity to experience local traditions for the first time.

Global DEI Diversity Equity and Inclusion Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. Instead, it’s about creating space for everyone to feel seen, respected, and valued.

Why Inclusive Holiday Celebrations Matter

Holidays are deeply personal, often tied to family, culture, and faith. For some, they’re about reconnecting with loved ones or honoring religious practices. For others, the season is a chance to recharge or reflect quietly. Inclusive holiday celebrations at work send a clear message: every employee’s identity matters.

Teams that feel included during the holidays also perform better—because feeling valued translates into higher engagement. A 2023 study by Glassdoor found that 76% of employees and job seekers prioritize diverse and inclusive workplaces. By embracing inclusive celebrations, you’re fostering stronger teams, boosting engagement, and creating a sense of belonging that extends beyond the holidays.

Practical Ways to Celebrate Inclusively

Inclusive celebrations don’t mean abandoning traditions like Christmas trees or holiday parties. Instead, they enrich the experience by inviting more voices and traditions into the celebration.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Acknowledge Diverse Holidays
Use a shared calendar to highlight celebrations like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Winter Solstice, and Lunar New Year. This simple step promotes learning and helps everyone feel recognized. One year, we introduced a ‘Holiday Traditions Wall’ where employees could pin notes or photos about what they celebrated—it became a favorite part of our workplace culture.

To make it even easier, explore tools like our Diversity Calendar Kit. It’s a great resource for keeping track of important cultural and religious observances year-round, helping your team stay informed and proactive in fostering inclusion. Subscribing to the calendar ensures you never miss an opportunity to acknowledge meaningful moments for your employees and communities.

Balance Traditions
If a Christmas tree is part of the decor, pair it with symbols from other holidays, like a menorah, kinara, or Diwali lamps. Invite employees to bring decorations or share traditions that matter to them.

Keep Language Neutral
Opt for “holiday celebration” or “year-end gathering” instead of “Christmas party.” These terms include everyone without taking away from the festive spirit.

Celebrate the Spirit of Giving
Organize activities like charity drives or volunteer days. These initiatives focus on universal values like generosity and kindness, making the season meaningful for all. One year, our team organized a toy drive for local families—it was inspiring to see how small gestures could bring people together.

Offer Inclusive Food Options
Food brings people together, but dietary needs vary. Offer vegetarian, halal, kosher, and allergen-free options so everyone can enjoy the feast.

Be Flexible with Time Off
Not everyone’s most important holiday falls on December 25th. Offering flexible schedules allows employees to celebrate what matters most to them.

Practice Inclusive Scheduling

Plan holiday parties and celebrations during work hours to respect employees’ after-work commitments and caregiving responsibilities. This ensures everyone has the chance to participate without additional stress or obligations.

Addressing Over-Cautious Approaches

In some workplaces, efforts to be inclusive have led to avoiding traditional elements like Christmas trees or holiday lights altogether. While this comes from a place of respect, it can feel like erasing traditions instead of celebrating diversity.

A few years ago, one of my colleagues shared that seeing the office Christmas tree removed made them feel like their favorite tradition had been dismissed. That moment reminded me how important balance is.

The solution is balance. Traditional symbols can coexist with those from other holidays, creating an environment where all cultures are celebrated. For example, display a Christmas tree alongside a menorah or kinara, with small notes explaining their significance. These gestures not only celebrate traditions but also encourage learning and connection.

Welcoming Newcomers and Honoring Traditions

For employees new to the workplace—or the country—holiday celebrations can be an exciting way to connect. Simple activities like tree-decorating, sharing holiday treats, or hosting multicultural storytelling sessions allow them to experience local customs while also sharing their own.

At the same time, employees who have grown up with Christmas should feel their traditions are valued. Inclusivity doesn’t mean replacing—it means expanding and enriching traditions to reflect the diversity of the team.

Making It Personal

One of my favorite workplace memories was a multicultural holiday display we created as a team. From Christmas ornaments to Diwali diyas and even handwritten recipes for Lunar New Year dishes, it was a beautiful way to learn about each other. Every contribution told a story, and that sense of connection stayed with us long after the season ended.

Taking the Next Step - Consider DEI Workplace Certifications

If your organization is already implementing inclusive practices, have you considered pursuing DEI Workplace Certifications? These certifications validate your efforts and amplify your impact, positioning your company as a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The benefits are significant. DEI-certified organizations attract diverse talent and connect with like-minded businesses that value social responsibility. Certifications also enhance your branding, making your company stand out as an inclusive and socially responsible employer. It’s a powerful way to celebrate your DEI achievements and unlock new partnerships and opportunities.

Celebrate the People, Not Just the Season

Inclusive holiday celebrations aren’t just about decorations or menus—they’re about people. They’re about creating moments where everyone feels they belong, whether they’re celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa, or simply enjoying a quiet season of rest.

This holiday season, ask yourself: What small changes can we make to ensure our celebrations reflect the diversity of our team? The answer lies in honoring traditions, introducing new ones, and fostering connections that last long after the holidays are over.

Global DEI Diversity Equity and Inclusion Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. Did you notice campaigns that felt personal or meaningful? Maybe an ad featured people who looked like you, or a store celebrated traditions you hold close. These moments weren’t by chance—they’re examples of how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are transforming marketing.

Think about this: 78% of shoppers say they prefer brands that reflect diversity in their advertising. That’s because inclusive campaigns aren’t just ethical—they’re impactful. They make people feel seen. And in today’s world, that matters more than ever.

Global DEI Diversity Equity and Inclusion Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. Shoppers come from all walks of life, bringing different cultures, traditions, and expectations. Inclusive marketing helps brands say, “We see you.”

Last year, I walked into a store during Black Friday and noticed a beautiful Lunar New Year display. It wasn’t just the products that caught my attention—it was the thoughtfulness behind celebrating a tradition important to so many shoppers. That simple gesture made me feel like the brand cared about its community.

Big brands are catching on. Walmart in the US highlights Latino-owned businesses in Black Friday promotions, and Sephora features underrepresented beauty creators. In Canada, Sobeys and Superstore embrace Lunar New Year and Diwali with curated festive displays. These efforts go beyond sales; they create belonging.

How Inclusive Campaigns Are Transforming the Holidays

Over the past few years, holiday marketing has shifted dramatically. It’s no longer about checking boxes with diverse imagery or slogans. Now, the most impactful campaigns dig deeper, celebrating traditions and connecting meaningfully with communities.

For example, in the U.S., Walmart has made it a point to feature Latino-owned businesses during Black Friday promotions. It’s not just a marketing move—it’s a way to uplift small businesses and connect with a growing segment of shoppers. Sephora is another standout, highlighting underrepresented beauty creators in its Cyber Week gift guides, making everyone feel included in the holiday shopping frenzy.

Canada has its own share of inspiring examples. Superstore leans into Lunar New Year celebrations with specialty foods that bring a taste of home to many families. Sobeys, on the other hand, curates beautifully designed Diwali gift baskets filled with sweets that spark joy and nostalgia. These efforts feel personal, not performative.

Meanwhile, Tesco in the U.K. reflects the country’s cultural diversity with holiday promotions that include halal, kosher, and vegan options. And in Australia, Woolworths ties Cyber Week into Chinese New Year by offering festive meal kits and in-store decorations that make the holidays feel inclusive for everyone.

These campaigns aren’t just clever marketing—they’re a reflection of the world we live in today, where customers want brands to understand and celebrate their unique experiences.

How Different Industries Are Embracing Inclusive Marketing

Inclusive marketing isn’t just for retailers or tech companies—it’s reshaping how businesses in every sector connect with people. Whether you’re running a grocery store, a university, or a consulting firm, inclusivity has the power to create deeper, more meaningful relationships with your audience.

In public relations and marketing, inclusivity is changing the way campaigns are designed. Agencies are collaborating with diverse influencers who bring real, relatable voices to brand storytelling. Many firms are also helping clients navigate cultural nuances, ensuring campaigns resonate with authenticity and avoid common missteps.

In higher education, universities are rethinking how they engage prospective students and families. Campaigns now feature diverse student stories and are often multilingual, making it easier for everyone to feel connected to what the school stands for. Some institutions are highlighting cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year or Indigenous Peoples’ Day to show that diversity isn’t just a talking point—it’s part of their identity.

Government organizations are also stepping up. Public health campaigns have started using more inclusive language and visuals, ensuring their messages reach communities that were once overlooked. For example, multilingual vaccine outreach campaigns have helped non-English-speaking groups feel informed and included. Local governments are also making civic engagement more accessible by creating voter education campaigns that celebrate cultural diversity.

In tech and IT, companies like Microsoft and Google are leading by example. They’ve developed tools like adaptive keyboards and screen readers that make technology accessible for people with disabilities. Meanwhile, initiatives to bridge the digital divide, like affordable internet access programs, are giving underserved communities the tools they need to thrive in a tech-driven world.

Recruiting and consulting firms are showing how inclusivity builds stronger teams and better businesses. Recruitment campaigns now spotlight diverse leadership and emphasize the value of different perspectives. Consulting firms are sharing stories of how they’ve helped clients build more inclusive workplaces, proving that DEI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a driver of real results.

Of course, retailers and grocery chains are making some of the biggest strides in inclusive marketing. Take Sobeys in Canada, which curates Diwali gift baskets that bring a sense of home to shoppers. Or Superstore’s Lunar New Year displays, which showcase specialty foods that celebrate cultural traditions. Even larger retailers like Hudson’s Bay are combining Christmas, Diwali, and Lunar New Year displays, ensuring every customer feels welcomed. These efforts go beyond products—they’re about making people feel seen.

Across industries, inclusivity isn’t just about representation—it’s about action. Whether it’s through creating accessible products, celebrating cultural traditions, or making messages more relatable, inclusive marketing is helping businesses build trust and loyalty. And when people feel valued, they’ll keep coming back—not just as customers but as champions of your brand.

How to Avoid Falling Into the Tokenism Trap

Getting DEI right requires more than surface-level efforts. Customers can spot tokenism and cultural insensitivity a mile away. For example, featuring diverse faces in ads is great, but if the rest of your campaign excludes underrepresented voices, it can feel hollow.

Here’s how to avoid common missteps:

Work with diverse teams to ensure authenticity.

Test your campaigns with focus groups that reflect the people you’re trying to reach.

Make DEI part of your year-round strategy, not just a holiday push.

Authenticity matters—when customers see that you genuinely care, they’ll respond with loyalty.

Blending DEI With Sustainability for Deeper Impact

Shoppers today care about values. Many, especially Millennials and Gen Z, want brands that combine inclusivity with ethical practices. Patagonia’s “Don’t Buy This Jacket” campaign during Black Friday is a great example. It encouraged mindful consumption while reinforcing the brand’s commitment to sustainability and fair labor.

When DEI and sustainability go hand in hand, brands create campaigns that resonate deeply with socially conscious consumers.

A Quick Checklist for Inclusive Holiday Marketing

Want to make your campaigns more inclusive? Start with these steps:

Feature diverse talent in your ads and promotions.

Offer multilingual messaging where appropriate.

Ensure your website and physical locations are accessible.

Highlight products from underrepresented creators or small businesses.

Partner with diverse suppliers for promotions and campaigns.

The Best Campaigns Don’t Just Sell—They Celebrate

The holiday season is about connection and celebration. Inclusive marketing gives businesses a chance to reflect the diversity of their customers and build deeper relationships.

What stood out to you this Black Friday and Cyber Week?
