Diwali will be a public school holiday in New York City starting in 2023

Diwali is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism celebrated by more than 1 billion people around the world. The date of Diwali fluctuates and is generally celebrated for five days. Starting next year in New York City, Diwali will become a public school holiday. New York City recognizes that Diwali is celebrated by a “growing number of New Yorkers.” The City encourages students to learn about Diwali, and takes action to acknowledge Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities.
